According to sources, Arunkumar was already dead by the time his colleague returned to their room at around 11 am. The colleague alerted Ayanavaram police and the body was sent to the Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for postmortem.

A 27-year-old police constable attached with the Armed Reserve Police force in Chennai died by suicide, police said on Monday. The deceased, N Arunkumar hailed from Virudhunagar and was posted at the Mounted Police Unit in Pudupet, police said.

According to sources, Arunkumar was already dead by the time his colleague returned to their room at around 11 am. The colleague alerted Ayanavaram police and the body was sent to the Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for postmortem.

The police have registered a case and further investigation is on.

A police official told indianexpress.com that police have not recovered any suicide note but suspect that Arunkumar could have taken the extreme step due to a family issue.

Addressing reporters, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) (Law and Order) A Arun said the high-ranking officer was undergoing treatment for depression.

Citing the ‘Police Well Being Programme’ initiative, ADGP Arun said the police department has been taking measures to mitigate the stress among police officials.
