Chennai's water supply may be delayed as CMRL works are yet to be completed

Temporary Water Disruption in Parts of Chennai: CMRL Pipeline Works on January 23

Introduction: In an effort to enhance the city’s infrastructure, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has announced a temporary suspension of water supply in specific zones of Chennai. The interruption, scheduled for 24 hours starting from 6 am on Tuesday, January 23, is due to ongoing pipeline works at Venkatanarayana Street and Chamiers Road in Teynampet. Residents in the affected areas, including Teynampet (Zone 9), Kodambakkam (Zone 10), and Adyar (Zone 13), are urged to prepare by storing water in advance.

Pipeline Works in Progress: The pipeline works, initiated by CMRL on January 8 at Chamiers Road and Venkatanarayana Street, are part of the ongoing efforts to enhance the city’s infrastructure. While the project is significant, completion has been delayed, prompting the need for a temporary suspension of water supply in the specified zones.

Affected Zones and Water Storage Advisory: Residents in Teynampet (Zone 9), Kodambakkam (Zone 10), and Adyar (Zone 13) are advised to brace for a 24-hour water supply suspension starting from 6 am on January 23. To mitigate inconvenience, individuals in these areas are encouraged to store water in advance. The interruption is specifically linked to the pipeline works at Venkatanarayana Street and Chamiers Road.

Continued Water Supply in Certain Areas: While water supply will be temporarily halted in the specified zones, residents without water connections and those residing in low-pressure areas across all three zones will continue to receive regular drinking water from water tanks. The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) has assured that essential services will be maintained during this period.

Emergency Water Assistance: Residents who rely on piped water supply and find themselves facing emergency water needs during the disruption are encouraged to contact the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB). The board is committed to addressing emergency water requirements promptly.

Dial for Water Scheme: In addition to emergency contacts, residents can also register and access water tank services through the ‘Dial for Water’ scheme. This initiative aims to streamline water services and provide a convenient solution for residents in need of water during the suspension period.

Conclusion: As Chennai undergoes critical infrastructure development, temporary disruptions in services may occur. The temporary suspension of water supply in specific zones is a necessary step for the completion of CMRL’s pipeline works. Residents are encouraged to cooperate and make necessary preparations, and the city authorities are committed to ensuring essential services continue uninterrupted during this period.
