Chennai Police Launches ‘School Traffic Volunteers’ Initiative to Ensure Safe Commuting Environment

The Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) has introduced a pioneering initiative called ‘School Traffic Volunteers’ (STV) aimed at fostering a secure commuting environment for students within school zones.

Designed to create a pool of traffic volunteers within every school, the initiative integrates the active participation of parents, teachers, and students in regulating traffic around educational institutions.

In a statement issued on Friday, the police outlined that the STV initiative, complementing the National Road Safety Policy, prioritizes educating students, parents, and teachers on road safety measures. Such awareness not only shields them from potential dangers but also cultivates responsible attitudes and adherence to traffic regulations.

Commissioner of Police, GCP, Sandeep Rai Rathore inaugurated the scheme at Vidyodaya Matriculation School in T Nagar.

The pilot project will commence at select institutions including St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School in Parrys, Kendriya Vidyalaya at IIT Campus in Guindy, SBOA Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Anna Nagar, and Vidhyodaya School.

The police department will deploy master trainers to impart practical knowledge encompassing traffic rules, pedestrian safety, road crossing techniques, bicycle safety, interpretation of traffic signs and signals, and advocacy for safe driving practices among students, teachers, and parents.

Additionally, Road Safety Patrol (RSP) cadets will assist volunteers in ensuring the safe commute of students during school hours.

STV volunteers will serve as intermediaries between law enforcement agencies and students, promoting a culture of road safety within school communities.

Upon successful implementation in four schools, the GCTP aims to expand the initiative citywide, envisaging a comprehensive school safety zone to revolutionize road safety practices.

The STV initiative underscores Chennai Police’s commitment to fostering a culture of safety and responsibility among students, educators, and parents, thereby ensuring a secure commuting environment for all.
