In a heartbreaking turn of events, the lifeless body of a nine-year-old girl, missing since last Saturday, was discovered in a drain near her home in Solai Nagar, Puducherry, after an agonizing 72 hours.

On Tuesday afternoon, authorities located the girl’s body wrapped in cloth inside a drain near Ambedkar Nagar, just a few meters from her residence. Tragically, her hands and feet were found bound.

The Muthialpet police acted swiftly, apprehending two suspects, a 59-year-old and a 19-year-old, in connection with the girl’s demise. A comprehensive investigation is currently underway.

The heartbreaking saga began when the Class 5 student of a government primary school failed to return home after venturing out to play on Saturday. Concerned parents and neighbors initiated a search, prompting them to file a missing person report at the Muthialpet police station on Saturday evening.

Specialized teams combed the area, utilizing CCTV footage to establish that the girl had not left town. Frustrated by perceived police inaction, the girl’s family and neighbors staged a road blockade on Monday, leading to tension in the town.

The situation escalated as hundreds of residents gathered near the tower clock, resulting in a confrontation between the police and the public. Despite assurances from the police and the local MLA, the crowd remained defiant, leading to a tense standoff. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), deployed for the 2024 Lok Sabha election in Puducherry, intervened to restore order. Several protesters were detained, and traffic management measures were implemented.

Expressing their anguish, the victim’s family criticized the police for not promptly identifying the body, despite their complaint four days earlier. Concerned parents declared their children’s fear of the crime, leading to school boycotts. They demanded stringent punishment for the perpetrators and staged protests.

Subsequently, the girl’s body was transported to JIPMER for a post-mortem examination, adding a somber chapter to this tragic incident.
