Former Maharashtra CM Manohar Joshi Passes Away at 86
Former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Manohar Joshi, breathed his last at the age of 86 after battling age-related health issues. Joshi’s demise follows a recent cardiac arrest, which led to his admission to the ICU at P D Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai.
Confirming the sad news, P D Hinduja Hospital’s chief operating officer, Joy Chakravarty, verified the demise of the veteran politician. Speaking to Hindustan Times, his son Unmesh disclosed that Joshi had been under observation in the ICU due to cardiac trouble, stemming from prolonged age-related health complications. The family intends to conduct his last rites at Shivaji Park crematorium following the necessary formalities.
Joshi’s health had been precarious since May 2023, when he suffered a brain hemorrhage, necessitating intensive care at Hinduja Hospital. Despite medical efforts, his condition remained critical, prompting his relocation to his Shivaji Park residence for continued care.
Born on December 2, 1937, in Mahad, Maharashtra, Joshi pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the esteemed Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) in Mumbai.
Joshi’s illustrious political career burgeoned from his affiliation with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to his pivotal role within the Shiv Sena during the 1980s. Notably, he ascended to the post of Chief Minister of Maharashtra in 1995, marking a significant milestone for the Shiv Sena as it assumed power in the state for the first time. Joshi’s tenure extended to the Lok Sabha, where he served as Speaker from 2002 to 2004 under the Vajpayee government.
Renowned for his organizational prowess and grassroots engagement, Joshi’s journey from humble beginnings in Nandvi village of Raigad district epitomized resilience and determination. His contributions to Mumbai’s development, including pioneering the slum rehabilitation scheme, underscored his commitment to public service.
Joshi’s enduring legacy extends beyond political corridors, encompassing his establishment of the Kohinoor Technical Institute, dedicated to skill development.
