The IMD has forecast moderate thunderstorms with rainfall in isolated places over Chennai and neighbouring districts, including Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Ranipet and Nagapattinam, till Wednesday afternoon.

Tamil Nadu capital Chennai and neighbouring districts witnessed surprise rains Tuesday, bringing much-needed relief from persistent heatwave conditions that even delayed school reopening.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate thunderstorms with rainfall in isolated places over Chennai and neighbouring districts, including Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Ranipet and Nagapattinam, till Wednesday afternoon.

A per the bulletin issued by the weather department, the highest rainfall of 5 cm was recorded in Jamunamarathur (Tiruvannamalai district), followed by Madurai (North), Madurai Airport, Moongilthuraipattu (Kallakurichi district), taluk office Pandalur (Nilgiris district) and Mahabalipuram (Chengalpattu district), with 3 cm each.

Popular weather blogger Pradeep John, known as Tamil Nadu Weatherman, took to Twitter and said the high clouds from morning thunderstorms, which came from Andhra Pradesh and went into the sea, will keep the temperature below 40 degrees Celsius on Wednesday in the northern part of Tamil Nadu, including Vellore, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Chengalpet, Chennai, Villupuram, Puducherry, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai.

As per the bulletin issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) on Tuesday, a cyclonic circulation lies over south Tamil Nadu at 5.8 km above the mean sea level, and light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur at one or two places in the state, Puducherry and Karaikal in the upcoming days.
