Rajan Eye Care Hospital launched an initiative to distribute ‘privilege cards’ to differently abled persons. The event was organised as part of World Sight Day, observed on the second Thursday of October every year, said Mohan Rajan, the chairman of the hospital.

There are around 180 to 200 million blind people all over the world. The theme for this year is vision first, he said.

“We have taken a niche group of differently able persons this time. This is the second edition of project VISDA (Vision for the Differently Abled). The first edition was launched a few years ago and we gave privilege cards to visually impaired persons. This time we have chosen persons with physical disability,” Dr. Mohan said.

So far, such cards have been distributed to 2.5 lakh people, he added.

Actor Srikanth and Chandramohan, district governor of Rotary International 3232, gave away the first few cards.

Tamil Nadu Maatru Thiranaligal Munnetra Sangam president R. Thangam received the first card.

The beneficiaries must carry the card with them and were entitled to eye screening and consultation visits.
